Discover the artisan and craft skills involved in our manufacturing processes and the different weaving techniques used to create our rugs and fabrics.
Fabric and rug design begins in our studio. Claire weaves on a dobby floor loom, exploring weave structures and interlacing colours to create fabrics that are inspired by patterns in nature. When the designs are ready, our fabrics are woven by specialist mills in the UK, and by artisan hand-weavers in Indian and Pakistan.
Our rugs are designed by Claire, and woven by skilled artisan weavers in India and Europe. There are different techniques of rug weaving, each creating unique rugs with individual characteristics.
This is an ancient craft whereby skilled artisans 'knot' yarns around the vertical warp threads and a metal rod, then cut across the knots to create the rug pile. Each rug then goes through a series of finishing processes including, sheering, combing, washing, stretching and binding of the edges by hand. Due to the intricate nature of this weaving technique, the design possibilities are almost limitless.
Take a look at our video below.
Hand tufted rugs are made using a hand-held tufting tool which inserts yarns into the back of the rug’s base fabric, creating a pile on the front of the rug. A natural latex backing is then applied to the back of the rug. The rug is then sheered to the correct pile height and the edges are trimmed and bound by hand. Some designs are also carved to add definition to patterns and colours.
We work with the best artisan producers who are expert craftspeople in their field. And, we make our rugs and fabrics with great care and respect for people, place and planet. This responsible approach means we are making considered choices about who we work with, the materials we use and how we deliver our products. There are many challenges along the way, and we are still working to improve, in every way we can, at every step.
