As you may have seen on our blog, Claire was recently invited to talk at an Industry Insights event hosted by eporta x Fritz Hanson. It was a really interesting evening. Interior designers and other trade clients gathered in Fritz Hansen’s London showroom to hear their Head of Design, Christian Andresen, as well as Claire Gaudion and Ella Doran, share stories about their design collaborations. We thought we’d share some stories of our collaborations with you too.
Swoon Editions: Designer Editions
One of our first collaborations was with Swoon Editions. This was also a first for Swoon, as it was their first ‘Designer Edition’ launch. Swoon released a series of limited edition ‘Designer Editions’ – a range of furniture that featured some of their best-selling pieces reimagined in new upholstery by a range of designers.
We first met Swoon’s team at a London trade show, and our collaboration stemmed from there. Design meetings followed, and we reviewed surface pattern design options, fabric quality, as well as which chair would work best for both our brands. Together we created a great product, which was well-marketed and the limited edition chair was a sell-out product.
There is great potential in collaborations and from a design perspective, it is a really exciting way to work. Working with people from other essential strands of the industry, we bat ideas back and forth, combine skills and expertise, and together create something really new and different.
“The 1950s-inspired Carnaby chair… upholstered in a sophisticated, geometric print designed by Claire Gaudion, a rising star on the printed-textile scene, and comprising soft grey, white, yellow, gold and blush-pink triangles. It is a thing of striking beauty.” Charlotte Abrahams, How To Spend It
Galapagos: Celebration of British Design
Our next collaboration was with Galapagos – once again partnering textiles and furniture. As you may know, Galapagos produce bespoke and contract furniture.
This was a celebration of British Designers, and colour and pattern - as you can see here.
Gemanco Design: Innovative Custom Product Design
Our partnership with Gemanco Design, an Italian company who produce innovative resin mosaics, uv printed surfaces and wallpapers was a totally new direction for us - new materials and new products, which require the translation of designs for custom products. Working closely with their team and in-house production, we’ve created resin mosaics, uv printed ceramics, wood, acrylic and glass surfaces for bespoke projects.
HI Rugs: Designer – Manufactuer Collaboration
Our most recent collaboration with HI Rugs - an established rug weaving company based in London and India - sees the coming together of contemporary designs and expertise in production. It is about showcasing designers AND producers. We enjoy this more transparent way of working and highlighting the production process. Thinking about it slightly differently… Design is Collaboration. Every product must be thought of, developed, sampled, tested, manufactured, marketed and sold. Each step of the process has to be done in communication with the others…. In collaboration. Every element of the product’s journey is important and adds to the story of its’ creation. Collaborations help to tell the product story from design to production.
Collaborations also of course offer an opportunity to reach new audiences. With our partners at HI Rugs, we’re now selling our rugs internationally, but, we also offer custom rug options, and are currently producing a number of rugs for interiors projects in custom sizes and colours.
Every Product has a Story
So for us, collaborations are an exciting way of developing new ideas and products, with informed experts to create items of best design, to the best quality, and with a story worth sharing.
